The SPD were trounced in the election over the weekend, suffering their worst ever voter support in a federal election. As mentioned here, Friedrich Merz's CDU/CSU alliance might not find it too appealing to team up with the SPD given the public backlash. At this point, pairing up with the Greens is much more inviting.
